Each Grindstone cost 25 Gold, in order to upgrade the blacksmith from level 1 to level , you will need gold.

Steps to upgrade Blacksmith

In order to upgrade the Blacksmith, you need to collect XP for your blacksmith. Successfully craft a weapon or armor and give Grindstone to blacksmith will increase the XP of blacksmith.

Visit the Blacksmith and click Up button.

Blacksmith before improve

If you have Grindstone in your inventory, you will receive this prompt. Click Yes button to upgrade the blacksmith. If you don't have Grindstone in your inventory, you will get the warning below.

Once you confirm to give Grindstone to blacksmith, you will see the XP bar is filling. Once this bar is full, the blacksmith will be upgraded and the bar will be reset.
